The Main Electrical Panel

Published January 3, 2015

Updated September 13, 2026.

Your main electrical panel distributes power to the circuits that serve your home. Understanding its purpose can help you describe a problem and plan an upgrade with an electrician.

What the panel does

The panel houses circuit breakers that protect the connected wiring against excessive current. A trip is a signal to investigate the cause, rather than repeatedly resetting the breaker. The panel works with the service equipment, meter and branch circuits; these components do different jobs.

When to arrange an assessment

Contact an electrician about recurring trips, damage or new electrical equipment you plan to install. Share the appliances involved and when the problem occurs. A review can distinguish a circuit problem from a need for more service capacity.

A larger panel does not automatically replace damaged wiring elsewhere in the house. Ask which repairs are included and whether utility coordination, permits or inspections are part of the proposed work.

Keep panel work professional

Do not remove the panel cover or touch internal components. Parts may remain energized even with the main breaker off. Keep the area accessible and have a qualified electrician evaluate concerns.
