Don’t Get Shocked! Hire an Experienced Electrician

Published March 4, 2020

Updated September 13, 2026.

Electrical work calls for training, appropriate tools and experience with the installation being serviced. A qualified electrician should also explain the proposed work in terms you can understand.

Start with the problem and the scope

Describe what you have noticed and when it happens. Ask how the electrician will assess the issue and what the initial visit includes. A repair recommendation should follow an assessment of the property, rather than a promise that every problem needs the same upgrade.

Ask about similar work

For a renovation, lighting installation or panel project, ask about comparable jobs and how the work will be coordinated. Make sure the proposal identifies included equipment, access requirements and any work by other trades.

Verify before hiring

Confirm relevant licensing with the authority responsible for the property, ask for insurance information and review the written estimate. Training certificates and a business’s advertising are useful starting points for questions, but they do not replace checking the applicable credentials.

Know what happens next

Discuss scheduling, anticipated power interruptions and how additional work will be approved. Request any warranty or service commitments in writing rather than assuming a universal guarantee applies.
