Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Home Electric System

Published February 9, 2016

Updated September 13, 2026.

Spring cleaning is a useful time to notice electrical wear and plan repairs. Keep your review to accessible, visible equipment; leave wiring and the inside of panels to an electrician.

Check the equipment you use every day

Look for damaged cords, cracked plugs or discolored outlets. Stop using damaged equipment and arrange repair or replacement. Check light bulbs against the fixture manufacturer’s instructions and keep electrical products away from water.

Review cord placement

Keep cords out from under rugs and furniture and away from places where doors can pinch them. Extension cords are temporary; regular reliance on them is a reason to discuss additional outlets. Never remove the grounding pin from a plug.

Follow the product instructions

Test GFCI devices and household alarms according to their manufacturers’ instructions. If a device does not operate as directed, arrange professional help. Do not improvise repairs or assume a reset has resolved a recurring fault.

Make a repair list

Note the room, affected product and symptom for each concern. An electrician can help prioritize the work and explain what an inspection covers. Read the CPSC home electrical safety checklist for further guidance.
