Once you are considering a panel upgrade, the next step is a clear scope of work. This guide covers what to discuss before installation, how to compare estimates and what to clarify about the handover.
Bring the plans and equipment specifications
Explain the renovation and the electrical equipment you expect to add. An electrician needs to assess the existing installation and proposed demand. The number of spare breaker spaces alone does not establish available capacity.
Separate panel replacement from a service upgrade
Ask whether the proposal replaces the panel, increases the electrical service capacity, or includes both. If utility coordination, meter equipment or additional circuits are involved, have those items identified in the scope. A panel replacement does not automatically renew every outlet or cable in the house.
Compare what each estimate includes
Check the specified equipment, included circuit work, required approvals and responsibility for arranging utility work where applicable. Ask how access will be handled and how any power interruption will be planned. Agree the schedule with the electrician before making arrangements around it.
Clarify testing and the project handover
Before accepting a proposal, ask what testing, circuit identification and documentation it includes. Also clarify which inspections or approvals apply to the project and who arranges them. Keep the agreed scope and any completion records together for future work.
