Licensing and certification describe different credentials. When hiring an electrician, ask what each credential covers and whether it applies to the work at your property.
What a license tells you
Licensing is administered by the relevant government authority. Requirements depend on the jurisdiction and type of work. There is no single training period or examination rule that can safely be applied to every electrician nationwide.
For a Nassau County property, contact the local building department about electrician licensing. The county’s Consumer Affairs license search specifically directs these inquiries to local building departments.
What a certification tells you
A certification may relate to a training program, product or specialized skill. Ask which organization issued it, what it covers and whether it remains current. A certificate should not be treated as a substitute for a license where one is required.
Questions to ask before a project
- Who will perform and supervise the work?
- Which credentials apply in my town or village?
- What experience do you have with this type of installation?
- What insurance, written scope and completion documents will you provide?
